Contractor Red Flags
Won’t provide evidence of General Liability Insurance or Worker’s Compensation.
Does not have active Florida construction license or certificate.
Promises to pay you or provide you gift cards in order to complete a free inspection.
Pressures you to sign an Assignment of Benefits or other contract without fully explaining or letting you read the entire contract.
Is not willing to provide a copy of the contract.
Claims their price is one-day-only or only gives a general estimate of the cost.
Promises to fix your roof at no charge to you or says they will rebate your insurance deductible.
Will only communicate in person and avoids emails, mail or texts.
How to Protect Yourself
Don’t sign anything on the first day. If they are a legit roofer they will need a day or two to create the estimate and will be willing to come back to sign the contract.
Check that they have an active, valid Florida license at www.MyFloridaLicense.com.
Verify that the contractor has Worker’s Compensation at Florida Proof of Coverage
Insist on seeing proof of General Liability Insurance.
Read the entire contract.
ALWAYS get a detailed, written estimate. It should include items like labor, materials (including manufacturer of shingles, tile or metal), type of underlayment and waste removal.
Make sure your insurance company inspects your roof BEFORE you sign any contract and BEFORE work starts. Call your insurance agent to schedule this.
